Religious FreaksAnd then there were two. On the USS Dallas (SSN 700) there were a couple major religious freaks. One of them was my LPO. Back in the 70s he was really big into weed and acid from what a friend off the boat told me. That portion of the story was freely expressed, but it still to this day remains uncertain what spooked him into becoming a religious freak. He became a rather large hypocrite, which to me appears as a fundamental basis of any extreme religious freak. I rightly named him "ET1 pot," as in "the pot calling the kettle black." It caught on, and it stuck. Now the second major religious freak can never be compared to anyone else. He is his own paragraph. The explanation of him is about two more. The guy always walked around and made this weird grunting sound. I never really understood it. Unlimited phlegm at his feet or something. Compared to how he looked, walked, talked, or acted this was not even the least bit annoying. To say this man was stupid would be unfair, as that word deserves better. I do not know where this guy stored all of his high lighters. He had to have over a dozen of them, as his bible was highlighted in every color of the rainbow. He had some things highlighted in multiple colors. I may see things a little bit differently, but I tend to think that the high lighter tends to loose its effect when it crosses every word in the book. That is maybe where the red and black underlines came in. He was a powerful combination of dumb and religious freak. He once was asked to perform somewhat complex eminence on broken gear. He did not let his years of training go to waste. He pulled his bible out and pointed it at the broken gear and began to pray. My second commanding officer could also be classified in this group, but not as extreme as those two. He asked many crew members about their religious beliefs in one on one interviews when he checked on board. I remember when he asked me like it was yesterday. I stated, "I don't know that I much believe in religion right now." He then followed with a "have you considered boat services?" I spoke a little big for my britches sometimes, I never let the cat get my tongue. I replied with, "I know this is the wrong answer, but even if I was religious, I would not want to associate religion with certain people off this boat." In that statement I was referring to the religious freaks, still somewhat naive as to where he stood among the religious freaks.
