Nuclear submarine FAQ's Crews Health Submarine Meal QualityWhen we are being actively inspected the meals are usually amazing. This brings on an extreme level of confusion, because the people who serve the meals do not change. Most cooks that I have seen are generally apathetic and do not care about the food they make. I can not completely place the blame on them though. Much of the same food that was available at the begriming of a meal is still around at the end of a meal. Most people underway are generally negative, and some of them take pride in picking on cooks. While they pick on cooks they feel important, but they do not realize that at the same time they are only lowering the submarine meal quality. A few of the cooks actually care, but it is only a matter of time before they convert. One of our cooks was the leading petty officer of the USS Constitution. It took a few months to convert him to hate. One fundamental flaw with the submarine meal system is that most of the crew works a 18 hr day and they usually serve meals based on a 24 hour schedule. They can only fund 3 meals a day, which I think is a dumb concept as they could change the numbers around and provide for serving 4 meals a day. The fourth meal that they serve is usually leftovers. It is called midrats and some people refer to the meal as mid scraps. When leftovers run out, they usually serve pork and beans, tuna noodle, or something else like that. Sometimes though, they ignore that they are out of food. In fact there is a story about bacon that is pretty funny. It goes to show what change a single and creative person can cause in a static system of brainwashed people. One cook was always rude and pissed off. He had this inappropriate feeling of importance. I thoroughly enjoyed the apology that he was forced to send to the crew in relation to his performance. He also is the same cook that I saw take a piece of chicken that fell on the dirty deck towels and place it back in with the rest of the chicken. Later he threatened to slit his wrists because he could not handle the submarine. Nuclear submarine FAQ's Medical Care
