Nuclear Accidents

Nuclear power plants have many advantages over other power generation means. They are clean and have neglible environmental effects if the waste is dispossed of properly. To best describe the environmental effects of a nuclear power plant, a similarly power rated coal power plant actually releases more radioactivity into the environment. On top of this, the coal plants have negative byproducts such as sulfer and carbon. Nuclear power is not all upside though, and here are some of its potential negative effects:

  • historically, mining and purifying uranium has not been a clean process.
  • improper regulation, mainenance, or operation of a single plant can release tons of radioactive dust into the environment
  • used fuel remains toxic for centuries. to date, there is no fully effective, safe, permanent storage area.
  • transporting nuclear fuel and waste presents a safety risk
  • due to these concerns, nuclear power plant creation has slowed in the United States. Many people believe the risk of nuclear accidents is not worth the rewards of nuclear power.

Nuclear power plants are typically designed with the utmost of caution, but that still does not prevent nuclear accidents from occuring. Two major nuclear accidents that have occured in recent years are three mile island and Chernobyl.
