Montgomery GI Bill

I was enticed into joining the navy for the Montgomery GI Bill. After high school I though I had little opertunity to pay for college so the Montgomery GI Bill, and the navy seemed like a good idea. I took the ASVAB and scored 99 on it, took the nuclear exam and got a near perfect score.

Years passed and I was a nuclear reactor operator on the USS Dallas (SSN 700). I was about to get out of the navy to go to college as planned. My chain of command did not want me to leave though. I explained to them that I was all set for college with the benifit of the Mongomery GI Bill. They explained it wasn't enough.

I explained that I had the navy college fund. They said it wasn't enough.

I explained I was going to add the Montgomery GI Bill kicker to receive further funding. They said it wasn't enough.

I explained I was from Illinois, where college is free for veterens. They said ok well that will cover college.

They then asked how I would pay for living expenses since the combination of

would barely cover the cost of college. I told them I would rather sell my blood vice stay in the navy. Today, being out of the navy, I feel well. Thanks blood for giving me an option, and thank you the Montgomery GI Bill!!!

For those of us who just got out or are in the reserves enjoying your Montgomery GI Bill, hopefully we are not involved in one of the future recalls. Hopefully we are not killed in combat. Hopefully we are not part of the 30% in a war zone who will develope PTSD.
