Please read, even though books are for burning

On submarines there are many obscure and interesting people. When one thinks about it, it is easy to see that little kids rarely want to grow up to be submariners. Many of those onboard submarines are only there because they made major life mistakes. Each person is like a book and tells an interesting story. After a while you get to know just about everything you want to and some things you don't about those around you.

In my eyes it is a horrible lifestyle. Few can do it, so they take just about anyone they can get. Due to the diverse cross section of people on submarines, you hear alot about friends favorite books. There is little to talk about as you know little about the outside world. News is delivered sparatically, and due to the mission you are on, you may not even be told when your family members die.

There is also not much to do onboard so frequently you read some of your favorite books over and over again. Anything that can be done to take your mind off the world you do not participate in is a plus. Many people read, as it passes the time, and when they are done with a book they will recomend their favorite books to you. People trade their favorite books back and fourth and at the end of the underway they realize that there is just another to come. Before going underway, it is a ritual to buy a buch of stuff like books and toys to try and make the underway seem bearable. Reading is one of the few rights that remain as they even do not allow listening to music some times. One of my biggest mistakes which allowed the USS Dallas (SSN 700) to eat me was that I did read much. Usually when I read I would just think about the world I was missing and how it was decaying in my eyes as I slowly lost all hope.
